Scandinavian Rosemaling—Small Violet Candelabra
A stylized painted violet with leaves forms the central design for this small hand-carved wooden candelabra for three candles. The violet flower blossom takes its shape from two S-shaped strokes—a motif often present in the Scandinavian folk painting form called “rosemaling.” Opal, the Colorado rosemaling artist, is known for her designs painted on lighter backgrounds like the pale lavender of this candelabra. For the violet design Opal has used acrylics in several shades of purple, green, and white—with just a touch of yellow.
The candelabra was cut by hand from five pieces of wood—a round base, an upright portion, and three ogee-shaped candleholders lined with metal. The candelabra is 5 1/4 inches high and 4 inches wide. The base is 3 inches in diameter. A central screw joins the base and upright pieces. Candles are not included.
