Phil Lingelbach (Oregon)

When Phil’s neighbors need an old fruit tree removed, they can call Phil. Phil cuts down the tree, hand mills the wood, air dries it, and uses it to carve his decorative spoons and other distinctive items. For each of his spoons, Phil uses a rotary burr saw and a scroll saw for the cutting but relies on hand tools for the decorative carving. Phil sometimes adds colors to the handle using aniline (alcohol based) dyes. As a finish, he applies three coats of a lacquer known as a “salad bowl finish” over the whole spoon. The designs are Phil’s own, sometimes inspired by old patterns.
