Crocheted Snowflake Ornaments—Wyoming Made

  • 1850

In many places, snowflakes symbolize winter or Christmas even if it rarely snows. Mary Maynard of Wyoming created her own snowflake patterns or uses existing ones (often with her own variations), but she always gave them six points because of the six "arms" or dendrites of a real snowflake. The artist used white cotton yarn to crochet her snowflakes, then she stiffened and ironed them so that they will show up well on your tree or windowpane. There are three snowflakes in this set. The flakes vary in size from 3¼ to 3½ in. in diameter. All snowflakes feature the same pattern, but since they are handmade of course there are slight variations.
