Native Alaskan Man Doll—by Sophie Charlie

  • 18700

This Man Doll by Sophie Charlie has a different look from the other Native Alaskan dolls in this collection. Animal skins and fur cover most of the doll. The artist made its smooth face and boots with calfskin (commercially obtained) and used beaver fur around the face. The gray striped fur muff and the black coat are both made from rabbit fur. Sophie used beads decoratively. The facial features are drawn on.

We obtained this and others of our Native Alaskan dolls through the assistance of the Anchorage Museum. The doll’s height is 12 ½ in. It needs support for display standing.
