Native Root Basket Necklace in Grey and White
Maria Godines reveals her basket making expertise in the lovely miniature Native root baskets that she hangs on her beaded necklaces. The basket on this necklace is woven with grey and white yarns. A look at the base of the basket shows how skillfully Maria has joined the structural warp ends. Elk buckskin, prepared by a taxidermist from Washington State, forms the basket facing that Maria hand stitches into place. The beads are made of bone, glass, and metal and are strung on artificial sinew, a synthetic material commonly used by many of today’s Native American artists. Maria burned the decorative design onto the long bone beads. The necklace is 35 inches from end to end (without the basket) and the basket is about 1 ½ inches high and 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Because of the length, no clasp is needed. This necklace can successfully be worn for any occasion.
