Scandinavian Christmas Ornament—Tomte with Porridge
The artist uses her Scandinavian rosemaling techniques to paint this wooden tomte Christmas ornament. The tomte figure has its roots in a mythical small elderly male being who helped protect farm and family from harm but had a scary side too. Today’s tomte is depicted in Scandinavia as a genial fellow who brings Christmas presents and cheer. On Christmas Eve some families in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark put out a bowl of porridge for “jultomten” (the Christmas tomte).
The bearded tomte on this ornament appears pleased with his porridge. The ornament is 5 1/8 in high. A ribbon is attached so that you can attach it to your tree, mantle, or the perfect spot on your wall.
