Zapotec/Oregon Small Woven Pillow #18 PC
Francisco Bautista wove this small pillow cover using the treadle loom and skills that he brought from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico to his new home in Sandy, Oregon. Francisco is primarily a rug weaver and uses his rug weaving techniques to make pillow covers. A fourth generation weaver, Francisco follows the Zapotec rug weaving traditions he knows as well as adding his own designs.
This pillow cover features the diamond-shaped “Eye of God” design. Francisco dyed the 100% wool yarns he used with all natural materials: pomegranate skins, cochineal insects, indigo, and onion skins.
Francisco’s wife Laura Gutierrez does some weaving and constructs the pillow covers using a black fabric backing with zipper. When unstuffed and lying flat, this pillow measures 13 ½ x 11 inches. When stuffed with its plump polyfill pillow insert, the straight measurement across the center of the pillow is 11 ¼ in x 9 in.
